Basic Things That We Want For Our Children
In my opinion the letter to the Colossians hits the nail directly on the head when it comes to the approach that we need to take for our children.
Colossians 1:9-12 [KJV] For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Colossians 1:9-12 [NETfree] For this reason we also, from the day we heard about you, have not ceased praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects - bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints' inheritance in the light.
I have included the NET version for clarification but I will stick with the KJV for my references. I have learned that I must take that attitude to my son and as it says do not cease to pray
. According to that scripture it starts with being filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding
. All wisdom includes scripture but since it is all it must apply to every aspect of life. So I ask myself if he (my son) or I am there yet. Have we even begun the process? Once you have started you go on to be fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God
. Then we go from strength to strength being Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power
so that we can be genuinely Giving thanks unto the Father
for the evidence of being saints. When I look at that, then where is my family along that path? What evidence is there in each member of my family for which I can give thanks? If that is what I want for my family then how do I get it all?
It was bad enough when I was growing up but now it is getting worse. After a parable encouraging us to be persistent Christ asks And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? [8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth
(Luke 18:7-8 [KJV])? Children growing up in this era are faced with challenges that were almost unheard of a generation ago. For example the whole education system ignores God and focuses on only its indoctrination of the youth to put their faith in the system, the establishment. When it fails them they are taught to blame themselves, not blame the system and turn to God. The indoctrination makes it seem natural that the knowledge of God can be ignored in the practical steps of life (getting a career, finding a wife, even inheriting the Kingdom). From their perspective you can just do what comes natural, rely on the system and it will work out. In reality that is neither natural or true. So what is true?
Proverbs 3:5-6 [KJV] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
According to Galatians 3:29 [KJV], And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise
. Christians are Abraham's seed and hence this scripture is directed to us. We need to know this and remind God of it in prayers for our children. We also need to remind our children that this is written to them.
Isaiah 41:8-14 [KJV] But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. 9 Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. 10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. 11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. 12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. 13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. 14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
God says this in spite of recognising that we are just worms
(verse 14). We also need to comfort our children with this when they are under stress.
Jeremiah 29:11 [KJV] For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
In addition we must also somehow get our children to practise the sentiment of these next scriptures, knowing that for most of us we cannot do it except by prayer and fasting.
Ephesians 5:15-19 [KJV] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Philippians 1:6 [KJV] Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Philippians 3:7-14 [KJV] But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
- Avoid unnecessary risk
- God (not the system) will complete His work in us
- Forget about past suffering or success and press on, be persistent
Why We Need To Pray For Our Children
I have found that those basics still leave me with a gap of confidence largely stemming from a lack of appreciation of where my own offspring fits in. In other words I am nowhere near Colossians 1:9-12 yet. The remainder of this message is me grappling with that. Our children, no matter how many we have, are targeted. Job lost his first crop of children. We look at the scriptures and we see that Abimelech killed Gideon's 70 sons. Samuel lost his children. Eli lost his children. David lost Absalom and a daughter to sexual violence. Hezekiah had Manasseh. We see the tragedy of Josiah's Children. These fathers were all amazing men so what hope is there for me? Perhaps the answer can be found in these next two cases:
- Solomon had lots of wisdom and understanding but lacked the Holy Spirit.
- Psalm 127 warns us that we will lose our families if God does not personally build them.
Make our Home His Abode
I find it interesting that this is my main point and that I even introduced it as a bullet in the list that I made but somehow I omitted it from my original composition. I will not elaborate on the need for the Holy Spirit as opposed to natural wisdom alone because we all know that as Christians but the point of Psalm 107 is that we cannot save our children. We are bluntly told that in the very first verse of Psalm 127.
Psalms 127:1 [KJV]Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
No matter what we do, unless God decides to build our house it fails. What is our house? According to Mickelson's Enhanced Strong's Dictionaries of the Greek and Hebrew Testaments
it is translated from Strong's H1004, Hebrew bayith
: a house (in the greatest variation of applications, especially family, etc.. It is talking about our family. So where does that leave us? Do we retreat in despair? Do we claim perfection so that God is obligated to us? Is there any sure hope?
I introduced the answer in my article Teach us to pray under the caption Keeping His commands
. Christ answered a question from Judas (not Iscariot) If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him
(John 14:23 [KJV]). It is from there that we extrapolate.
The Ten Commandments were introduced when the glory of the Lord abode on mount Sinai. We can see the power associated with that but it also shows us that His abiding is connected with The Commandments.
Exodus 24:16 [KJV] And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud
Moving forward we see the connection with the pillar of cloud and fire that they followed.
Numbers 9:17 [KJV] And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents
Following this Israel made a Golden Calf that broke God's Commandments in Exodus 32, forcing Him to remove his abode in Exodus 33. With that abode went God's initial blessings and they knew it. God's abode is a powerful thing that Israel craved all its existence. It became connected with the Ark of the Covenant (that contained the Ten Commandments) which they took to battle and resorted to in time of crisis. Taking it in to battle it showed that they were keeping them and not breaking the stone tablets. To keep the focus on our children we jump over much of that and come to Elijah.
I Kings 17:19-23 [KJV] And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again. 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Elijah had made his abode with a woman living in Zarephath and we see his response when her son died. Where did Elijah get the heart to do that from? Elijah pursued the child through death and brought him back. He would not let him go even after he was dead. The first person the Bible records as raised from the dead is the son of this widow. Elijah had no precedent. It resulted from the place being his abode. It was not a fluke since the same thing happened with Elisha.
II Kings 4:9-11 [KJV] And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.
So Elisha had an abode. Some time later this transpired.
II Kings 4:30-37 [KJV] And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.
These were just men so what would happen if we have the living God making an abode with us? An then we have Psalm 112.
Psalm 112 1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. 2 His seed shall be mighty {Hebrew gibbowr
: powerful} upon earth: the generation {Hebrew dowr
: period, term, season} of the upright shall be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. 4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious {well mannered, kind}, and full of compassion, and righteous. 5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. 6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. 7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed {erect, upright}, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. 9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. 10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
It does place some responsibility on us to be gracious but there is no getting away from the promise. The only prerequisite is to fear God primarily demonstrated by keeping His commandments. It is repeated in Psalm 115.
Psalm 1151 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake {stay true to your reputation}. 2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. 9 O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield {i.e. the shield and help of those that trust him}. 10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. 11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield {i.e. the shield and help of those that fear him}. 12 The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron. 13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great. 14 The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children. 15 Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth. 16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men. 17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. 18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.
Notice from Psalm 112 that it is connected with keeping God's commandments (that is how we show fear of God) and is also what Christ emphasised in John 14:23 quoted in beginning this topic above. Elijah and Elisha responded positively to the need because they had an abode in the house, but they would not have known about the children if the parents had not brought a petition to them. Praying involves bringing petitions to God just as the parents brought petitions to these men.
In God's Best Interest
I think that they go a long way in teaching us fundamentals of why we need to pray for our children and what to pray about. Their intelligence would never be sufficient even if it was the very best it could be. I want to add another consideration that is perhaps the most potent option, that being that it is in God's best interest. Our children are presented to Christ at childhood to be labourers and are later baptised as a further step in that direction.
The bible is clear on presenting children (especially the firstborn) to God (Luke 2:22-23), and on bringing children to Christ for blessing (Mark 10:13-16).
Luke 2:22-23 [KJV] And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
Mark 10:13-16 [KJV] And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
If we have done these things, then God certainly knows our children, but what would He want with them? What use are they to Him?
Prophecy
There are two main analogies that Christ gave for Christians. One is fishermen and that appears to apply to the apostles, who are the people that transitioned from apprentice labourers after basic training. The other is labourers which applies to all Christians. The apostles are labourers who passed basic training and were selected and sent to a do a specific task. This is according to prophecy.
Jeremiah 16:16-21 [KJV] Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. 17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes. 18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things. 19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. 20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? 21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.
The prophesy also mentions hunters. This can only be a reference to the final directive given to the Twelve as they were sent to hunt down the Ten Lost Tribes and share the Gospel with them. Both fishermen and hunters are apostles. They were first trained as fishers, which is a more general endeavour, and finally given a more specific task as hunters, but in both cases they were sent and hence apostles and are labourers. The Twelve were therefore hunter-apostles or hunter-labourers in function but they were never given that name by God. Fishers and hunters are both labourers.
FISHERMEN
Perhaps it is at this juncture that I should point out that according to the majority of scholars, Mark was the first Gospel to be written. It is believed that both Luke and Matthew used Mark as the main source to which they added their own perspectives. Fishermen generally do not look for specific fish, but throw out their nets and God provides a catch. The emphasis of my next scripture is Matthew 4:19.
Matthew 4:17-25 [KJV] From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. 21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. 23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. 25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
Mark makes the same point in Mark 1:17.
Mark 1:14-20 [KJV] Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. 19 And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. 20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
Luke makes the same point in Luke 5:10.
Luke 5:1-11 [KJV] And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simons, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
The context shows how He did that, i.e. made them fishers of men. He taught them how to be fishers by example. Matthew summarises it this way teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease
. He taught in a way that it was clear that He knew what He was talking about. He taught of their future in the Kingdom. He helped people in a meaningful way. These attracted people to them. He later sent them to do the same thing that He did.
LABOURERS
According to Jeremiah 16:16 we may be described as hunters or fishers, but in either case there is work to be done and we are all labourers. Matthew 9:37 and Luke 10:2 make it clear that the labourers are scarce and it also gives a command or commandment!
Matthew 9:36-38 [KJV] But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
Luke 10:1-4, 16 [KJV] After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. 2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. 3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. . . . 16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
At the risk of being offensive by labouring the obvious, I point out that we are commanded to do this, i.e. pray for labourers, and who better to recommend than our children. I don't care if they have left the Church
. God is the potter and refiner and He would have known them all their lives. However we cannot tell God how to reward His labourers. Some may seem to benefit more than others for their effort but our only concern is that He rewards us according to His promise. Jealousy leads to mischief.
Matthew 20:1-16 [KJV] For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
Everybody cannot be a big kahuna
, or the one who has preeminence, and I do not believe that most of us want that anyhow. Paul says that he built a foundation in Corinth based on plans given to him by God. He welcomed others building on that foundation as long as they followed the same plan. The plan does not belong to Paul and neither do the other labourers. Everything belongs to God and is for God but also for our corporate benefit, not for any individual. Our argument needs to be that our children are among the best that there is available, they just need some help. Every child does not have to be a Peter or a Paul or an Apollos. In any case you may be surprised to see that people who may at first seem to be less may in reality be very much more. I will go on to talk later of Barnabas and Mark and others.
I Corinthians Chapter 3 [KJV] And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every mans work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. 20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. 21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; 22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; 23 And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.
That includes the females. Women are fellowlabourers. Because of biological differences and societal norms it is not practical to expose them to all situations that men can be immersed in, but other than that they have the same gifts and power from Christ that strengthens them. They are not to be held back.
Philippians 4:3-13 [KJV] And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. 10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
You do not need to be a Paul. Remember that Paul and Mark had gone their separate ways because Paul condemned him for leaving the work (Acts 13.13, Acts 15:38-41, Matthew 18:21-22). Now Paul calls him a fellowlabourer. Paul is the one who later said that you can have all of these fancy gifts but the greatest one is brotherly love (1 Corinthians 13), and it may be Mark that taught him that. Who made them both labourers? Mark was a Christian before Paul was, and he apparently outlived Paul. Mark endured longer.
Philemon 1:19-25 [KJV] I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. 20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. 21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. 22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you. 23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; 24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers. 25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. Written from Rome to Philemon, by Onesimus a servant.
How do we endure as labourers?
James takes a turn in the rich who sustain their wealth by defrauding the labourers/employees. He likens Christians to these employees and tells us how to endure. Notice that it is the well-to-do who put stress on the labourers. He does not say rich men of the world
just rich men
. These are the affluent and influential. Remember the Pharisee, and the publican that beat his own chest (Luke 18:11-14).
James 5:1-4 [KJV] Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
That should remind us of the Message to Sardis in Revelation 3. To continue, the rich typically endure by afflicting the labourers, and maybe this also applies to those who think that they are rich as defined in Revelation 3. They are the taskmasters that belittle the labourers and prosper at their expense. According to Revelation 3 they think pretty highly of themselves but we continue with James.
James 5:5-15 [KJV] Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. 7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. 10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. 11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. 12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Some of the specific advice is found in verse 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms
. According to Mickelson (Mickelson's Enhanced Strong's Greek and Hebrew Dictionaries) the word translated psalm
here is:
- G5567 psallo (psal'-lo) v.
- 1. to twitch or twang, i.e. to play on a stringed instrument (celebrate the divine worship with music and accompanying odes)
In short it does not say hymns
. Obviously the standards of Christianity censor us from certain types of music but not all uplifting songs are hymns. To you or I rock music may be noise but to them it is not. You may be surprised if you took note of the lyrics. To sum up then in order to endure, pray (don't get angry or hostile) when you have stress, sing and celebrate when you are happy, and seek the support of the elders (not the pastor) when you are sick. Africans are famous for demonstrating the power of singing while labouring.
We need to observe our children as is within our ability and have directed prayers and interventions when we notice these things. We are the elders for them. It goes on in verse 15 to deal with sickness and sin. Prayer is the solution to both. The solution is not the elders, it is the prayers.
Labourers have no direct benefit from a successful harvest. They are paid a wage according to a promise. We briefly considered the parable in Matthew 20:1-16 where a householder went out and saw idle workers and offered them a penny for their daily wage. In Matthew 9 and Luke 10 Christ talks about the labourers being few and appears to be saying that He wants this done. Labourers are dependent on the generosity of the householder. A labourer that is sick cannot work and a labourer that is happy can work harder. For our wage we are promised eternal life. Labourers need to have endurance.
How do we do the work of labourers?
The basic example that Christ left is that we are first trained as apprentices and then we are sent to prove that the training worked. We touched on the nature of the training when we dealt with the topic of Fishermen
: Christ set the example and later we will see that He gave them a chance to work independently. We began with Colossians 1 which demonstrated the importance of wisdom and understanding as a first step. We cannot work without it.
James 1:4-8 [KJV] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Luke 11:10-13 [KJV] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
That covers the two main elements of training for labourers: wisdom with understanding and the Holy Spirit. This is confirmed in the election of who are commonly referred to as the seven deacons in Acts 6.
Acts 6:3 [KJV] Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
According to them these were a prerequisite to be eligible to wait on tables, the lowest responsibility defined by the Church.
Acts 6:3 [KJV] Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
They (wisdom and understanding and the Holy Spirit) are therefore essential for labourers. Wisdom and understanding includes mastering the scriptures.
II Timothy 3:15-17 [KJV] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Our general responsibility is to carry out the main command
Matthew 22:36-40 [KJV] Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Mark 12:30-31 [KJV] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Family is not mentioned there so where does family fit in?
I Timothy 5:8 [KJV] But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Our biggest responsibility is to our family! It is not to build a church or win converts, it is to pass on wisdom and understanding with the Holy Spirit to our families. Apostolic work comes after being a reliable labourer and it is opened to all as we will soon see. The offices
that people crave and extol (bishop and deacon) were not established by Christ directly but came much later. As far as the priority of the Church is concerned let us start with Timothy. The greatest responsibility of a labourer is not an apostle (and hence being specially selected) but to his family, and not when one is given the office of a bishop
.
I Timothy Chapter 3 [KJV] This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
The other label that emerged to describe the responsibilities of labourers to sustain the Church is deacon.
Philippians 1:1 [KJV] Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.
I am going to look at what these words mean and hence what is expected of those who are ordained to these offices
which I prefer to look at as gifts. Gifts that can be abused by those who like preeminence.
Bishop and deacon, are always found together in the body of letters to Timothy, Titus and the Philipians. The places where they do not occur together have been added by some unknown editor at the end of the letter, and cannot therefore be verified as scripture. These additions are the places which make them appear to be jobs. Bishop is found on its own only once and that is in speaking of Christ in the first general letter from Peter.
DISCIPLES
Disciples are followers of Christ. Jesus attracted followers but He explained that it required supreme commitment.
Luke 9:57-62 [KJV] And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
The disciples were being trained, as it turned out in some cases, to take the responsibility to wait on tables. God takes everything that He does seriously and for us to even be on the bottom rung we need to reflect that.
The evidence of discipleship is already in our children. They understand, they already know the mystery of the kingdom of God
. God already has a vested interest in making them to be some of those labourers that are scarce.
Mark 4:11-12 [KJV] And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
The Parable of the Sower is found in Matthew 13:1–23, Mark 4:1–20 and Luke 8:4–15. What are the issues highlighted there? Let us pick it up from Mark 4:14-20 [KJV].
1.
[14] The sower soweth the word. [15] And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Are you going to allow that without a fight? Are you going to let what God has planted be snatched away. Keep praying and keep talking about God.
2.
[16] And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; [17] And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
If they have no root then we have to be the root for them and pray. Keep them attached to us and feed them as part of our vine. We also need to do what we can to help them through the affliction/persecution and to avoid being offended. I got these three tips from a website called faith.ph
which featured this article How to Overcome Feeling Offended
https://faith.ph/tips-and-advice/how-to-overcome-feeling-offended/ Posted by Contributor | Sep 29, 2021:
- Listen with the ears and heart to understand and not to attack or defend
- Be honest with how you feel. They will not know unless you tell them
- Remember that what they say about you or others, says more about themselves and less about you
So what if our children do not want to listen, do not want to talk, and do not want to see it through God's eyes and from the other's perspective? The only course of action that may be left is prayer.
3.
[18] And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, [19] And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Another tough job but we have to remind them of the vanity of these things and pray.
4.
[20] And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
If we keep battling successfully through prayer we hope for this result. We form part of the good ground for them.
THE TWELVE
In the case of the twelve Christ hand picked and called them at the beginning of the work. After initial training they were sent to work on their own.
Luke 9:1-6 [KJV] Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. 4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. 5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
Mark 6:7-13 [KJV] And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: 9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. 10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. 12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
Christ's concern was that they were too few to address the needs of the work.
And so He sent the 12 as apostles!
Matthew 10:1 [KJV] And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2-10 [KJV] Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. 9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
Notice that this is where the term apostle was introduced, when they were initially sent to the lost sheep of Israel
in the area surrounding Jerusalem, not when they were sent to the twelve scattered tribes of Israel, and we will soon see that they were not the only apostles. Also notice what the training to be an apostle entailed. You had to be willing to set out with nothing and address the needs of the people, armed only with the Holy Spirit and Judas had done this successfully.
Luke 22:35 [KJV] And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
Just for information a script
is a food bag. Now back on topic, this is why Christ warned people who wanted to be His disciples, because the final exam depended on it so that by the time that He was ready to leave this earth He could give them the great commission
. He was not exaggerating. He wanted people that were loosed from the shackles of this life.
It appears that He was willing to send these on their final training as apostles but they would not go. All disciples must be trained as labourers and graduate to be able to carry out the commission.
Mark 16:19-20 [KJV] So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
Luke 24:44-49 [KJV] And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
So Christ gave a template of how a Church (the group of people called out) is to be developed. It is not focussed on somebody called an apostle but on training others to be independent and rely only on the Holy Spirit. He neither created pastors before or after the 70. Christ is who opened their understanding of the scriptures not a pastor. He was very concerned that they were not up to the task.
Luke 9:38-42 [KJV] And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
This concern persisted until His crucifixion. He did not want them holding on to His skirt tail. He wanted them to be independently able and do greater things. It bothered Him to the point of crying.
John 11:35-44 [KJV] Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
THE SEVENTY
Following the castigation in Luke 9 of some who desired to follow Him Christ selected seventy in Luke 10 to go in pairs and preach the gospel. He gave them the same training as the 12 and sent them as apostles in the same way. Notice that He considered 70 to be still few! There were only 12 tribes so why did He need seventy more trained in the same manner?
Luke 10:1-20 [KJV] After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. 5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. 7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: 9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, 11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. 13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. 15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. 16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. 17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
The seventy and the twelve became apostles after initial training, i.e. they had qualified to be sent. When they became scattered because of Stephen they were effectively sent and anonymously did the work wherever they went. We will look at a couple more later, but for now it is quite possible that Barnabas was one of them. Barnabas was a nickname, his given name was Joseph, a Levite, born in Cyprus (Acts 4:36). He earned the nickname Barnabas (son of encouragement) from the twelve. Very early on he had sold land and laid the money at the apostles' feet
(Acts 4:36-37). Since this happened soon after the day of Pentecost, he must have been an early convert and not one brought in by the Twelve, hence he was very likely one of the seventy. He had obviously earned the right to be sent and so they arranged to send him to Antioch.
Acts 11:19-26 [KJV]Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. 22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. 23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. 25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
The work of Paul was built on Barnabas. Barnabas was successful before Paul. It seems that Paul never actually called him anything but Barnabas and so Luke did the same. Christ had left a foundation of people that He could call on.
The next one I look at now is Matthias.
Acts 1:15-26 [KJV]And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) 16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. 21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. 23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Where did they get these two from? They were already trained and just had to be selected. What happened to Barsabas from Acts 1:23? Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren
(Acts 15:22 [KJV]). I was inclined to believe that he was the same person as Judas Barsabas but this is what Mickelson's Enhanced Strong's Greek and Hebrew Dictionaries (hereinafter referred to as Mickelson) the indicates:
- G923 Βαρσαβᾶς Barsabas (bar-sab-as`) n/p.
- 1. son of Sabas (or Tsaba)
- 2. Bar-sabas, the name of two Israelites .
Judas and Joseph were probably brothers whose father was Sabas. He was good enough to be of the twelve apostles so where was he when they wanted people to wait on tables? In my opinion he was doing the work to which he was called elsewhere. It's not as though they could not find him. He was not sitting around waiting on the twelve. Also note that Silas, who accompanied Paul, was not dependent on Paul. He was one of the chief men among the brethren
, also And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them
(Acts 15:32 [KJV]).
THE SEVEN
It is generally believed that the seven were of the seventy that Christ had trained. The Bible nowhere says that but it is logical. Their appointment is described in Acts 6:16. Although they are presently referred to as deacons that does not come from the scriptures either. The Seven were:
- Stephen the martyr
- Philip the Evangelist
- Prochorus
- Nicanor
- Timon
- Parmenas
- Nicholas
The works of Stephen and Philip are the only two recorded in the Scriptures. There are extra-biblical records indicating that Nicholas became apostate and is the origin of the term Nicolaitan
in the Revelation recorded by John.
STEPHEN
Stephen had no title but he was unstoppable as a labourer. Notice verse 10.
Acts 6:8-15 [KJV] And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. 9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. 11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. 12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, 13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. 15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
Stephen knew the scriptures. In Acts 7 Stephen recounted the history of Israel to make a point,
Acts 7:51-60 [KJV] Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. 52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: 53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. 54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
God knew what was happening to Stephen and He did not prevent it. Christ and the Father were standing and hence alert. Bad things can happen to the very best of us. The book of Job goes more deeply into this. After the Martyrdom of Stephen the disciples began to be scattered.
Acts 11:19-21 [KJV] Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
PHILIP
Philip had no title either and was also unstoppable like Stephen, but in a different way. Philip went to Samaria. He is referred to as the evangelist
in Acts 21:8. He was not ordained an evangelist! It was a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:5-14 [KJV] Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city. 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
It was Philip, not Peter, that stirred up the work in Samaria. Christ had explicitly told the twelve not to go there (Matthew 10:5 [KJV]) These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not
. It was also Philip that caused the gospel to go to Ethiopia. After leaving Samaria the Holy Spirit sent Philip to Gaza. From Samaria to Gaza is 129 km and Gaza is to the south of Samaria. After Gaza he was found back north of Gaza in Azotus (a.k.a Ashdod) about 38 km north of Gaza.
Acts 8:26-40 [KJV] And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: 33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea.
Philip and Stephen did not wait on Peter or anybody else. They were empowered by Christ to do God's work and they did not allow themselves to be held back. They did not focus on labels. Paul visited Philip who had been employed in God's work much longer than Paul.
Acts 21:7-9 [KJV] And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day. 8 And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Cæsarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. 9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.
Why was he called an evangelist?
II Timothy 4:1-5 [KJV] I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
An evangelist was a counter against apostasy and false doctrine. Part of evangelical work is what is called apologetics
nowadays. Philip had been doing evangelical work before Barnabas or Paul and by Acts 21 he had not stopped. There were no limits placed on Philip. On the other hand Paul was directed to Gentiles and his objective was to reach Rome (Acts 19:21, Acts 23:11), but he did not plant the gospel there, it was already there when he reached. Somebody acting as evangelist had to have taken it. Philip was obviously doing the work since he was called the evangelist
but he was not the only one. Philip was not called deacon
but was identified as one of the seven. Philip's evangelical work was an extension of the work that he did in his family. According to Acts 21:7-9 he had settled in Caesarea and had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy
. How many pastors today let their daughters prophesy
? How did it happen with Philip? Christ's example was to teach and then send the disciples out in pairs. Did these stay at home and preach? The word prophet
does not mean the same as seer
. Because of Nicean Church bias against women we get the idea that they were shut up in the house and spoke only to their father. Is that what John did?
Revelation 10:11 [KJV] And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
Revelation 11:3 [KJV] And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Is it what the Corinthians did?
I Corinthians 14:39 [KJV] Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Why is there a distinction between prophesy
and see visions
and dream dreams
?
Acts 2:17 [KJV] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Why is there a distinction in Corinthians?
I Corinthians 14:6 [KJV] Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
What is it that Isaiah did in order for it to be recorded today?
Matthew 15:7 [KJV] Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
He was given understanding of the future and spoke about it. That is what prophecy is about. We are given understanding about the Kingdom and we speak about it to whomever will hear. Philip had taught his daughters to gain spiritual understanding and publicly talk about it. Philip's daughters spoke such that it made an impact on Paul's group. They were not shy to speak in the company of men and teach them of the future Kingdom. Furthermore they were living in Greek society and this provided them with an additional opportunity, brought out by this scripture Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues
(I Corinthians 14:39 [KJV]). Speaking in tongues does not mean rambling on in incoherent gibberish (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). They were brought up with the Hebrew language and also spoke fluent Greek. They could therefore translate what Christ said as well as the Hebrew Torah. Why does God reveal things to His servants, the prophets? One daughter could be a fluke but four? In ancient Roman society there would have been limits to women as evangelists (e.g. being suddenly found in some strange place) but they could, and did prophesy as with Priscilla. Her husband Aquila is traditionally counted among the seventy and apparently did his homework. He taught his wife and gave her independence.
Priscilla and Aquila
There is no evidence in the Bible that Peter was ever in Rome. Before Paul ever reached Rome he wrote the Church there a letter so he could not have started it. In that letter he presents a list of some of the people. You can read the list of names for yourself in Romans 16:1-16. It is a long list and these are only the ones that he knew and wanted to greet. It is quite possible that the Church there was developed by people like Priscilla and Aquila because they were there: Romans 16:3 says Greet Priscilla and Aquila ...
. These two had travelled with Paul for a while and were already Christians when they met him. These are the same two who had updated Apollos in the teachings of the Gospel. They moved around a lot and were known to host the Church at their house as shown by The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house
(I Corinthians 16:19 [KJV]). When Paul wrote to Timothy at Ephesus they were there. They were apparently in Philippi with Paul when he wrote 1 Corinthians as was just shown in I Corinthians 16:19. It seems like they moved around quite a bit and were always in the service of the gospel. Therefore these two evangelists were in Rome long before Paul.
To take a closer look at Romans 16: Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: [4] Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. [5] Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ
(Romans 16:3-5 [KJV]). The context suggest that they were of assistance to all the churches of the Gentiles
. So we saw that Philip was an evangelist long before Paul and now we have also taken note of Priscilla and Aquila. The people were working before there were any fancy titles to describe them. The titles came after. That is want we want for our children. We want them capable and independent.
DEACON
The Philippian Church was established by Paul at the beginning of his second journey. In Acts 15:36 Paul expressed his desire to visit the churches in cities where he and Barnabas had preached. Because of a dispute Paul ended up going with Silas. The expression by Luke And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God
(Acts 15:40 [KJV]) makes it appear that Silas was subservient to Paul and was obliged to obey, but that could not be further from the truth. Silas did not need Paul but chose to accompany him. Silas was a chief man in the Church (Acts 15:22 [KJV]). While on that mission Paul had a vision to go the Macedonia and settled at Philippi which was one of its chief cities. The letter to the Church was written many years later when Paul was incarcerated in Rome (Philippians 1:7, Acts 28:16-31). The words deacon
and bishop
first appear in Philippians 1:1 with the work of Paul. The only other person to use the word bishop
is Peter and it was in referring to Christ.
I Peter 2:25 [KJV] For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
The word deacon
essentially means servant and bishop
means overseer/inspector. We can swap out the words deacon and bishop and replace them accordingly. They are not fancy titles but words used in regular language.
Ephesians 4:11-12 [KJV] And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
As you can see these are gifts, i.e. He gave
, and they do not include deacon or bishop. These words are used to generalise the roles of labourers. Some oversee the work of other labourers but all serve. Someone may oversee in evangelism and be a deacon in teaching. The gifts are of God while these general labels are of men. The list in Ephesians begins with apostle
which is how Christ began things. He first tested if His labourers could be sent. Later we have Stephen, who clearly was given the gift of a prophet, followed by Philip an evangelist, and after the dispersed Church became more established, pastors and teachers (like Priscilla and Aquila).
BISHOP
What does bishop
mean and what does it entail? According to Mickelson it is:
- G1984 episkope (ep-is-kop-ay') n.
- 1. inspection (for relief)
- 2. (by implication) superintendence
I have searched around and the fundamental meaning of the word is something like inspector
. People who want to give themselves preeminence have added highfalutin meanings to the word. A bishop must be someone who is able to inspect and report to God and the other labourers when relief or assistance is needed. Labourers who are not given adequate relief or assistance can quickly become overwhelmed and burned out, especially if they are selfless as the disciples were. He should be able to recommend a course of relief. That's it. The rest is done by God. The overseer might have been given other gifts by God but that is on an individual basis. With that in mind let us look at some of what God tells us. We begin with Acts 1 and the term bishoprick
.
Acts 1:20 [KJV] For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
That is referring to the scope or range that was opened to Judas as one to inspect and report to God and God's people for relief, and his specialty was the state of the finances. He was not called accountant but that is what he did at the time. This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein
(John 12:6 [KJV]). In the long term the Twelve were each assigned to a tribe of Israel, Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. [29] And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; [30] That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel
(Luke 22:28-30 [KJV]). So their ultimate job was to inspect the state of the tribes and report back to God with recommendations for relief. Judas had the personal talent of being an accountant. They were not given power to control Israel in their mortal lives.
At the other extreme Jesus is called the Bishop of your souls
(1 Pet. 2:2125) where the obvious intention is to monitor the state of our lives with the objective of providing relief. It is the same role of bishop but Christ has other gifts which give Him power at any time.
I Peter 2:21-25 [KJV] For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
These other bishops and deacons did not have that power.
Philippians 1:1 [KJV] Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
Notice that the end of 2 Timothy was added by someone other than Paul.
II Timothy 4:22 [KJV] The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen. The second epistle unto Timotheus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Ephesians, was written from Rome, when Paul was brought before Nero the second time.
Titus Chapter 1 [KJV] Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; 2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Again notice that all that is written after Amen
in the letter to Titus was added later.
Titus 3:15 [KJV] All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. It was written to Titus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Cretians, from Nicopolis of Macedonia.
Apostles
Paul makes a comment on the organisation of the Church in his first letter to the Corinthians.
I Corinthians 12:28-31 [KJV] And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Apostles are a feature of the New Covenant and were all trained personally by Christ. The first 12 were the foundation and held in highest regard. Often the word apostle
was qualified by using 12
to identify these foundational ones. Luke takes a different approach in his Gospel and in the book of Acts. When he says apostles
the 12 is implied. Paul said that he was also an apostle and explained that Christ taught him in Arabia (Galatians 1:17-18). Barnabas was most likely trained as one of the 70 (who were like floating apostles and could fit in anywhere) so he and Paul were hand picked by the Church and sent to the gentiles. People tend to look at names and view apostle as higher than bishop but they are very different and an apostle can be a bishop and vice versa. A bishop cares for a flock. An apostle is sent to accomplish a task and may move on. The two jobs require different skill sets. Many people view Paul as perfect, I do not. I do believe that he was a great Christian man with strong faith and unquestioned commitment. Paul struggled with certain issues which I believe came out in his writing. For example in Galatians 2:8 he said For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles
. He did not say effective in Barnabas and I although God clearly sent Barnabas too. In addition, at first he says that they seemed to be pillars
but later he said in Ephesians 2:20 [KJV] And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone
. Paul continuously grew as a person. In spite of whatever faults he might or might not have had I do not see where Paul claims that he was the only apostle to the gentiles or the main apostle to the gentiles. He simply points out that he was just as effective in drawing gentiles to Christ as Peter was to Jews. Paul does not appear to have followed Christ's pattern for establishing independent labourers and Churches of today follow Paul. We do not know how the twelve apostles established the Gospel where they went. According to Paul he was called for a specific purpose (I Corinthians 1:1 [KJV] Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God. . .
). This is also the correct translation of Romans 11:13 as is corrected in the New English Translation, Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Seeing that I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
(Romans 11:13 [NETfree]) and corroborated in his letter to Timothy, Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity
(I Timothy 2:7 [KJV]). Apostles are sent with a directive as was the case with Peter, Paul and others. Even though the 70 were not given a directive to a specific following upon their initial return, the Holy Spirit continued to work powerfully in them. It does not make sense to compare Philip with Paul.
Galatians 2:7-12 [KJV] But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. 10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do. 11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. 12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
Paul confronted Peter before he was officially recognised as an apostle. Peter had issues but so did Paul. If Paul did not have issues he would have been healed of his affliction
. The point is that there is no perfect human and our example of perfection is Christ alone.
The present practice in Christianity is that groups are brought together under a man. That man controls
the group. That man typically does not have the gifts that Christ gave to the seventy far less the twelve, yet he and his inner circle seek to censor the other Christians from exercising God given independence in his/their church. It stifles the Church. The Church belongs to God and He sets the rules. Many of the rules devised by these religious elites were inherited from the Catholic Church and do not come from scripture. Paul (as did the other noted 82 apostles) had power given by the Holy Spirit and it was evident in his actions. Today's elites have political power based on dividing the Church against other Christians, but little evidence of the power of the Holy Spirit.
We are all labourers together unless we can demonstrate that we have graduated to something more. Our children have that same potential to graduate as was given the first 82 and it is our privilege to assist in their training. We cannot send them. God has to do that. God sent apostles to demonstrate that they could survive on their own in pairs before He unleashed them on unsuspecting potential disciples. Our first job as parents is to help our children learn to survive on their own, without the backing of a Church group or pastor or whatever. They must be independent first and then contribute to the group out of love and not out of need for survival. That is the mark of a true apostle, one that has graduated from being dependent to one that is a fisher or hunter. Having said that, the evidence of the Spirit is not the same in everyone.
I Corinthians 12:7-11 [KJV] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Defective labourers
God does not want to use anything that is defective. If you search through the New Testament for the word perfect
you will see how many times the scriptures tell us that God aims for perfection.
Ephesians 4:13 [KJV] Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
But yet this is the reality for some of us as was mentioned earlier in this article.
Isaiah 41:13-14 [KJV] For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. 14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
We are just worms
(verse 14) as defined by But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people
(Psalms 22:6 [KJV]). So what is the solution? Prayer. When dealing with broken people God has to be involved, whether it is an age old problem like drug addiction, gambling, or any of the more recent entrants to the stage which include the spectrum of developmental disorders like ADHD and so on. These are all situations where people are compelled or driven to harm themselves or have their faculties stymied.
There are two key issues with defective labourers: one is wisdom with understanding
and the other is the Holy Spirit less than a mustard seed
. I will illustrate the concern with wisdom and understanding first.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 [KJV] If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Now the solution of sharpening a blunt cutting tool may seem so obvious to most, but for a person with impaired faculties it may never enter their consciousness. Depending on how severe it is they will not understand even if you go to great pains to explain. You may never understand why something so obvious does not spring to mind immediately because to you it is natural. They just do not have that feature in them but God can give it instantly. You can find examples of the value of wisdom in Proverbs 2 & 3 and elsewhere.
The second issue is really power. There is a spirit in man and the human spirit can provide significant power, however the Holy Spirit is far more powerful, so why settle for less? The Holy Spirit provides faith which in even tiny quantities can move mountains (Matthew 17:20-21) and heal people.
Job 32:8-9 [KJV] But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. 9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
Ecclesiastes 3:20-21 [KJV] All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Every human being has a spirit that gives them power, which may be significant in some cases, but the Holy Spirit, given as needed by Christ, can provide limitless power as Paul recognised, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me
(Philippians 4:13 [KJV]).
The situation of demon possession in scripture is representative of the range of serious personality problems mentioned earlier. Let me be very clear here, I am in no way suggesting that these problems involve any type of demon possession. I am saying that they capture people's personality and diminish people's faculties in the same way that demon possession does. The real person is in there struggling to escape, but cannot break free of these mental shackles. Attempting to alter peoples' personalities without absolute reliance on God can be disastrous. Fixing personalities is a very delicate operation and God needs to be involved long-term. For example a relapse (or multiple relapses) is often part of recovering from alcohol and other drug dependence and can typically be considered a feature of the recovery.
Matthew 12:43-45 [KJV] When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
So you see that while we may be oblivious to the true danger the person is actually at risk of permanent harm. What may appear to be initial success can lead to a final escalation of the problem. Mary Magdalene was defective, broken. She had seven demons and in that state she hardly could pray for herself. She would scarcely have been inclined to know the scriptures or the Messiah. Either Christ healed her of His own volition or someone else interceded for her, but based on the previous scripture there had to be long-term commitment to provide and accept help. In this same way our children may not appreciate or recognise the condition that they are in.
Mark 16:1-11 [KJV] And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. 8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. 9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.
Mary Magdalene had become devoted to Christ and Christ to her. People can be blessed by God and go away in an ungrateful manner as we have see with the nine out of ten lepers (Luke 17:11–19) and other places. Keeping God's commands is how we show that love, and neglecting them can be disastrous. Even beyond that our gratitude for life-changing assistance should result in an improvement of our spiritual lifestyle. We are called to account for our gifts As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God
(I Peter 4:10 [KJV]). Also, as mentioned before if the demon
returns there must be something occupying our presence to resist it from returning even more devastatingly. For example money is hard to come by and for someone in dire straights giving money to honour Christ is very difficult, but we have to set aside for God's feasts and give wherever else we can. Mary Magdalene was evidently not poor but she was a giver.
Luke 8:1-3 [KJV] And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, 2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, 3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Lazarus' sister Mary was fairly well to do or else how would she end up with this valuable perfume. She lived in Bethany and aside from that she could have been the same Mary Magdalene. Also keep in mind that in the parable householder hiring labourers a days wage was a penny (Matthew 20:2). This ointment was therefore worth a year's wages since there would have been 52 Sabbaths to add to 300 days for the 300 pence.
John 12:1-7 [KJV] Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
There is also the unnamed woman who was a sinner. This could easily have been Mary Magdalene earning this reputation in her former life when she was possessed, but this incident occurred in Capernaum (Luke 7:1). Such women could easily be prostituted or abused in some other way for profit (Acts 16:16-19). We can look here and see how the unnamed woman responded to Christ's goodness.
Luke 7:36-50 [KJV]And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat. 37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on. 41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Perhaps the sinner was Mary Magdalene but I will not pursue that because if God wanted it to be proved He would have made it clear. I will however proceed under the assumption that she was for the sake of my point. Somebody would have had to intercede on her behalf and we see the result. She came to love God and supported the work in the capacity that she could. She became a labourer. Our children may be defective but look at the potential. Also notice that in this and other cases of Christ's healing, all other sins were forgiven at the same time. When Christ does the job of healing He can also deal with the consequences of other transgressions at the same time. His admonition is therefore go and sin no more
, because even though the subject of our request for healing for may not be a result of our sin, we are not perfect and the other sins would have been forgiven at the same time.
Being Considered Useless or Worse
We just saw that God can take someone who is completely defective and turn them into a labourer and a fisher. Mary was definitely defective. With seven demons you are incapable of rational behaviour. For all intents and purposes you are considered useless. But that is not the only way to be considered useless, we are about to consider Mark. The other question that I want to ask is are you willing to be a Barnabas? You might ask yourself why Barnabas and not Paul? Paul is greater isn't he? Both Paul and Mark are as a result of Barnabas. Mark wrote the first Gospel and the others copied from him and added their embellishments, but it is Mark that is initially responsible for us having Gospels. It is Barnabas that went for Paul when all of the others wanted little to do with him because they did not trust him. Paul started out with the kind of intolerant spirit that would be willing to kill people that did not agree with him, And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him
(Acts 22:20 [KJV]). I would consider Paul to be the or worse
.
Paul was rejected and he in turn rejected Mark as hopeless. It could have been because Paul still had some of that spirit of my way or the highway
. Our children need a Barnabas and God's kingdom needs the Barnabases of this world. The Gospels started with Mark and most of the rest of the New Testament is about Paul. So what is the story with Barnabas and Paul?
Joseph, a Levite, born in Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (son of encouragement), sold a field he owned, brought the money, and turned it over to the apostles
(Acts 4:36). This is the first mention we have of Barnabas.
Apparently soon after his conversion Paul knew that he would have to preach to the gentiles and went to be taught directly by God. He returned and went to Damascus where he had been struck down by God. After a period of about three years (Galatians 1:17-18) he went to see Peter. He had begun to preach but apparently was making little progress except for making the Jews want to kill him.
Barnabas' new name fits what we know of his actions. When Saul (or Paul) came to Jerusalem after his conversion, most of the Christians there wanted nothing to do with him (Acts 9:26-27). They had known him as a persecutor and an enemy of the Church. But Barnabas was willing to give him a second chance. He looked him up, spoke with him, and brought him to see the other Christians, vouching for him.
Acts 9:26-29 [KJV] And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. 29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
When the Gospel started to spread to the gentiles in Antioch, the Church sent Barnabas.
Acts 11:19-24 [KJV] Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
When Barnabas saw the magnitude of the work he sought Paul's assistance.
Acts 11:25-26 [KJV] Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
That is when Paul's work took off and Paul recognised that his transformation was through the kindness of God.
I Timothy 1:13-14 [KJV] Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Paul now worked with Barnabas to assist the Church.
Acts 11:29-30 [KJV] Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judæa: 30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
This is also where Mark enters the picture.
Acts 12:24-25 [KJV] But the word of God grew and multiplied. 25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
Paul was among others who were given the gift of being teachers.
Acts 13:1 [KJV] Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
They sent Paul and Barnabas off because God obviously had special work in mind for them to do, so Paul and Barnabas went off on the missionary journey together, taking Mark with them. Part way, Mark turned back and went home. When Paul and Barnabas were about to set out on another such journey, Barnabas proposed to take Mark along, and Paul was against it, saying that Mark had shown himself undependable. My way or the highway.
Acts 15:36-41 [KJV] And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. 37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. 39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; 40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
Barnabas wanted to give Mark a second chance, and so he and Mark went off on one journey, while Paul took Silas and went on another. Apparently Mark responded well to the trust given him by the son of encouragement
, since we find that Paul later speaks of him as a valuable assistant and wants his help (2 Tim 4:11; see also Col 4:10 and Phil 24). Who would you rather have in your life, Paul or Barnabas? All Christian parents need to be Barnabas and not my way or the highway
.
The Final Ingredient is Faith
If you are anything like me you have tried and tried and have not seen the results. The Bible explains that the problem is faith or rather our lack of it.
Matthew 17:20-21 [KJV] And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
So what can we do to turn things around?
Romans 10:17 [KJV] So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17 [NETfree] Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word of Christ.
Putting those together we see that faith is a gift but a gift that is based on knowing the scriptures or what is said to us directly by God. So one thing we do is increase our knowledge of scripture. The next thing is the main subject of this article, prayer.
Philippians 4:6-7 [KJV] Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Faith is a gift so we ask for the gift.
Ephesians 2:8 [KJV] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Luke 11:9-13 [KJV] And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
You might say, well, that's not very helpful because it says nothing of faith
; but now add this.
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
So the gift of faith is there but camouflaged in . . . the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him
. Our faith can be increased through prayer.
Luke 17:5-6 [KJV] And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. 6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
Mark 9:23-24 [KJV] Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
The evil one may target our children to prevent them from reaching their potential but their minds can be transformed
Romans 12:1-2 [KJV] I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Once transformed they can go on to be powerful labourers in the service of God.
Luke 22:31-32 [KJV] And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
This brings us back to the objective that we started with at the very beginning i.e. why we pray without ceasing and how we justify our pleas for our children.
We want our children to be:- filled with wisdom and understanding
- live worthy of the Lord in everything
- be fruitful in every good work
- growing in knowledge of God
- strengthened to generate patience and joy
- showing gratitude to the Father
A worked example
The psychiatrists and medical experts would like us to believe that our only solution to caring for our children is their brand of methodologies. The Bible shows us anther way.
For this example I chose a case where a child has impaired faculties (perhaps diagnosed with ADHD etc.)- John 14 says that we love Christ and Christ loves us and lives in us and in our home, if we keep the commands/commandments (John 14:13-15, John 14:22-24)
- In Romans 4 and Galatians 3 it says that we are Abraham's seed and therefore all the scriptures are to us (e.g. Romans 4:12, Romans 4:16, Galatians 3:29)
- Even if the worst case were true and we were treated as heathen still Christ healed the Syrophoenician woman who was a heathen (Matthew 15:21-28, Mark 7:24-30)
- James 1 tells us that if we lack wisdom and understanding we pray for it (James 1:5-8)
- In Matthew 7 and Luke 11 Christ tells us that if we lack faith we pray for the Holy Spirit and the Father will not deny us (Matthew 7:7–8, Luke 11:10-13)
- The fruit of the Holy Spirit includes faith (Galatians 5:22-23)
- We want our children to be fishers (which are labourers)
- Christ says that He lacks labourers for the harvest and we should pray for more (Matthew 9:37-28, Luke 10:2)
- Our children are perfectly suited since they have been taught the scriptures and to keep the Commandments from small so it is a win-win
- To be fishers (e.g. Philip - or Stephen without the martyrdom¯_(ツ)_/¯) they need wisdom and understanding, the very things that are hampered by impaired faculties
- Christ healed Mary Magdalene and raised Lazarus restoring their full faculties (Luke 8:1-3)
- If our faculties are healed we need the void to be filled by the Holy Spirit or the end result will be worse than the first (Matthew 12:43-45)
- Our children need the Holy Spirit and their full faculties and they need us to be like Barnabas
- For our faith to succeed we too need to pray for faith (the fruit of the Spirit) even as much as a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20; Mark 11:23; Luke 17:6)
Sin no more
This section is one that is not fully developed and I hope to spend more time on it at a later date. John points out a problem that we face in seeking healing.
John 5:10-14 [KJV] The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. 12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? 13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
John 8:7-11 [KJV] So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
In John 5 the person had been afflicted with an infirmity for 38 years. We don't know what it was and it is unlikely that he knew the cause and ignored it, nevertheless Christ warned him that he could end up in a worse condition if he sinned again. This is similar to what we know from the healing of possessed people brought out earlier in Matthew 12:43-45. The second case (the one in John 8) involved a woman caught in adultery. That is something that she certainly knew about. When God provides help He expects us to correct any contributing factors. In the case of children with impaired faculties that is easier said than done.
MONITORING, FEEDBACK AND CONTROL (The conclusion)
Remember that very early on I asked what would God want with our children. They fit right in as labourers. For any dynamic system to stay on course and reach its objective it must have monitoring, feedback and control. In the specific case of children with impaired faculties they understand the world differently and the percentage of that classification of person is increasing. We cannot monitor what we cannot even properly observe. Perhaps God is in the process of preparing our children to deal with that but He needs labourers that can understand. Parents can do our part by helping God to bring them to maturity. They can then do work that we are not capable of. The monitoring, feedback and control in the church is done by God but we do the manual labour. The manual labour seems to centre on the bishop whether or not one officially exists. As I see it bishop is a general term for labourers with the responsibility to monitor, but it does not confer power. In the case of Ananias and Sapphira we see exceptional power of the Holy Spirit in Peter and so they died. That type of power is not required and the Holy Spirit is given on an individual basis.
Look at the situation with the Corinthians. There were no apostles there to deal with the situation domestically. There was no bishop either yet someone acted as bishop and reported to Paul. Paul had power given by God and it was evident. The best situation is when there are domestic apostles or bishops. In the case of Corinth one can see a stark difference when comparing it with Judea. The native Jews of Judea would have been immersed in the Old Testament from children and knew it much like Apollos did. They only needed updating. Apollos was a devout Jew born in Alexandria. He appears to have been taught by John the Baptist. Corinth was probably much like Antioch.
Acts 15:20-32 [KJV] But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. 22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: 23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. 30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle: 31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation. 32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
The men that were sent (Judas and Silas) were undoubtedly from the seventy. These men were not born with super powers. This is the answer to what God wants with our children and what specifically we need to pray about. Just like these men our children have come up with the scriptures and practising obedience to God, so they can be quickly trained to do the work of labourers. Judas and Silas were not novices and they prophesied like Philip's daughters. They were not seers. The elders sent advice on the basics as they perceived that the new converts would learn the rest from attending Sabbath meetings and personal study, not at the Synagogue as they would have been uncircumcised. These were new to the scriptures so you could not quickly train them and send them out. Churches however all graduate to the point where they are no longer focussing on the milk as is pointed out in Hebrews 5:13-14. At that point there needs to be an emphasis on sending apostles. Barnabas took this approach and found Paul. They went off as a pair. Most churches could not handle 70 as Christ did but most do not even try. We have to try with our children to give them that independence. Following that they can support the church in monitoring and feedback to God and man.
The Parable of the Talents
, in Matthew 25:14–30, tells the story of a master who was leaving his house to travel, and before leaving, entrusted the care of his property to his servants. As I see it the key point of the parable is And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine
(verse 25). The issue was that he hid his talent, the reason just serves to emphasize that core problem. This is supported by another presentation by Jesus Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [9] Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? [10] Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
That is from Matthew 7:7-10 [KJV]. These are intended for comfort not for fear! Everybody that earnestly tries is rewarded. The talents that Christ left us include some very mundane things as is pointed out in Matthew following the parable of the talents. The discourse, found in Matthew 25:31-46, concerns the distribution of rewards at Christ's coming to people who had been kind to Him. He pointed out that the kindness was in practical things that they had done for people who were serving Him, and this would include service to your family.
